Does it work

Tracking young peoples progress with the Outcomes Star

How do we know whether it is working?

Great Expectations and Aston Project started using the Outcomes Star to track progress with young people engaged with the interventions. All staff have been trained and licensed to use the Outcomes Star.

The ‘Teen Star’ covers a number of aspects of a young person’s life which are supported by an evidence base linked to the health and wellbeing of young people and the linked likelihood to be involved in criminal behaviour.

Outcomes Star

Aston Project started using the Outcomes Star for all new referrals in October 2017 and aim to complete a second star with each young person within 3 months of the first star, and every 3 months thereafter. So far 3 young people have completed more than one Star, which is demonstrated on the below visual;

The green line indicates where the average of the 3 young people were when they first came into contact with Aston Project and the blue line indicates the average progress made when they were next interviewed. There are currently 14 young people who have completed their first star and will complete their second in the coming weeks/months.

Star 1 – Aston Project, Sept 2017 – Jan 2018

Each aspect of the young person’s life is measured with them using a scalar of 1 to 5 as follows:

1 – not safe
2 – want change
3 – making changes
4 – doing alright
5 – safe & well
